I-Team: Accused murderer talks with 8 News NOW

LAS VEGAS - A murder suspect is speaking out from jail in an 8 News NOW exclusive.

Earlier in the week, the family of victim, Makalya Rhiner spoke about domestic violence and Rhiner's death. Now, the man who's accused of taking her life is talking.

Brandon Hanson is accused of killing her after she broke up with him. Police say he confessed to the murder but when the I-Team talked with him in jail, he appeared to be backtracking.

Reporter Vanessa Murphy: "Did you make a confession?"
Brandon Hanson: "You're going to have to talk to my lawyer about that because there is some issue around that."

Metro Police said, in a recorded interview, Hanson became emotional and admitted he stabbed Makayla Rhiner in the neck on Aug. 3.

According to the arrest report, he said, he drove to her southwest valley apartment complex to discuss the status of their relationship. When he tried talking to her in her garage, and she wasn't interested, he got angry.

Reporter Vanessa Murphy: "Did you kill Makayla?"
Brandon Hanson:  "Again, you're going to have to talk to my lawyer, I'm not answering questions like that."

Hanson first agreed for an interview with 8 News NOW then said he changed his mind, but answered a few questions.

Reporter Vanessa Murphy: "Did you know Makayla and date her?"
Brandon Hanson: "I did." 
Reporter Vanessa Murphy:  "OK, just for a few months?"
Brandon Hanson: "Since the end of February."
Reporter Vanessa Murphy:  "Since the end of February. OK, and did she break up with you?"
Brandon Hanson:  "Sort of...  it's a, it's a long story."

The 33-year-old met Rhiner, who was 21, at College of Southern Nevada. Police said, he also admitted to damaging cars belonging to Rhiner's mother and new boyfriend.

Reporter Vanessa Murphy: "Have you been treated for any mental health issues or ever been arrested for any type of abuse or violence?"
Brandon Hanson: "No, I've never been arrested for anything like that."

Hanson's next court date is Oct. 11.
