I-Team: Nearly a dozen pot dispensaries burglarized around Vegas valley, source says

LAS VEGAS - It's been about a month since recreational marijuana started being sold legally in Nevada and burglars are already targeting the new businesses.

The purchase of recreational marijuana became legal in Nevada on July 1, and since early June, according to an I-Team source, there have been nearly a dozen break-ins at dispensaries across the valley.

Police say there were four at medical marijuana dispensaries in Henderson in June alone. One of the burglaries in Las Vegas happened early Friday around 3:42 a.m., at Zen Leaf Vegas near Sunset and Fort Apache roads.

According to Metro Police, the suspect broke a window to enter the business, stole marijuana, and fled on a BMX style bike.

An alarm alerted staff and Metro Police to the burglary.  The suspect, who was described as a black male adult around 30 years old with a small mustache, can be seen on surveillance video.

"I do believe that security is becoming a lot more necessary than it has been in the past," said Danielle Stoker, general manager of Zen Leaf.  "The recreational transition has created a lot of attention in the industry."

Due to the rash of break-ins, Zen Leaf has new policies in place. It has also extended its armed security to work around the clock.

"We are more concerned about our employees, and we are more concerned about creating a safe environment for our customers and having our employees and our customers feel safe when they are shopping and when they are working here," Stoker said.

The general manager said in addition to capturing the suspect's image on surveillance video they have also obtained his fingerprints and blood.
