I-Team: Committee Votes to Expel Brooks

*An earlier version of this report incorrectly stated that Steven Brooks was expelled from the legislature.

CARSON CITY, Nev.  -- For the first time since 1867, members of the assembly will vote to oust one of their own.

The committee voted to move forward with the expulsion of North Las Vegas Assemblyman Steven Brooks late Tuesday night. Committee members voted 6-1, with Assemblywoman Dina Neal casting the dissenting vote in favor of suspending Brooks.

Assembly Majority Leader William Horne opened a special bipartisan select committee Tuesday night to hear evidence and testimony on the behavior of the embattled Brooks, who represented a district in North Las Vegas.

A legislative report on Brooks will not be released because of Constitutional protections, Horne said. The report binder appears to be hundreds of pages thick.

The seven-member panel's task is to recommend what action, up to possible expulsion, should be taken against Brooks. Since January, the 41-year-old has been arrested twice, hospitalized for a mental evaluation and placed on leave from the Legislature.

Nevada Legislative attorney Mark Ferrario said private investigators did 50 interviews to look into Brooks and attempts to speak with the assemblyman went unanswered.

Horne, a fellow Democrat, convened the committee at the state courthouse in Carson City at 7:38 p.m., about 90 minutes after the scheduled start because Brooks' lawyer, Mitchell Posin, experienced travel delays.

Posin said Brooks would not be attending the hearing and he waived making a public statement to the committee.
