I-Team: Conservative Group Wants Teachers' Work Email Addresses

LAS VEGAS -- A Clark County judge must decide whether public school teachers' work email addresses are public, too.

Nevada Policy Research Institute, a conservative thinktank, took the school district to court Tuesday morning.

The institute wants the email addresses for their campaign to tell teachers how they can quit the teacher's union.

"Everyone is sympathetic to not wanting to get direct mail in their mailbox at home or solicitations through their email in their inbox, but the law is on our side," said Joseph Becker of the institute. "The law says that these email addresses are a public record and they're available."

The district released a statement saying, "CCSD is committed to transparency and continuous communications with our community. Providing a list of all 17,000 teachers' email addresses does not provide the public with additional transparency, it would only serve to interfere with important information that needs to flow between our educators and the parents of our students."

A judge is expected to make a decision on whether the email addresses remain private within days.
