I-Team: Federal Prosecutors Unveil Indictment in 'Medical Mafia' Conspiracy

Federal prosecutors have uncorked a blistering indictment which alleges a dark conspiracy involving some of the best known doctors and lawyers in Las Vegas.

The conspiracy was first reported by the Channel 8 I-Team almost two years ago, but this is the first real glimpse at what the government will allege once the case gets to court. The superceding indictment has just been unveiled.

So far, only two people have been indicted in the doctor-lawyer conspiracy case -- attorney Noel Gage, slated to go on trial in February and alleged middleman and medical fixer Howard Awand, who will be tried in the fall.

But, the new version of the indictment makes it clear that many other high profile professionals were deeply involved in an ongoing scheme that may have fleeced legal clients and severely injured patients out of tens of millions of dollars, money that went instead into the pockets of doctors, lawyers, and middlemen.

The presiding judge in the case had asked for proof that there were even any victims or laws broken. The indictment answers those questions.

It lists 10 different cases where injured patients put their trust in their doctors and attorneys only to have those professionals cut side deals behind the scenes to divvy up judgements and settlements, depriving the clients of what they had coming.

The lawyers allegedly encouraged doctors to commit perjury, to hide conflicts of interest, and to accept large kickbacks for their help.

Although the indictment does not list the full names of the victims or perpetrators, it does include first names and initials and it isn't too tough to figure out who is whom. It's a complicated case but we will have further reports in the lead up to the first trial to explain the government allegations and the defense's response.
