I-Team: Indictments Reinstated in Medical Mafia Case

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has given new life to a massive federal investigation of local doctors and lawyers.

On Thursday morning, the court ordered the reinstatement the criminal indictments against medical consultantHoward Awand and attorney Noel Gage who are suspected of conspiring to steal millions of dollars from personal injury victims.

Las Vegas attorney Noel Gage will face a new trial as will self-described medical "fixer" Howard Awand. Gage and Awand are among two dozen local doctors and lawyers suspected of cooperating in a complicated scheme to siphon tens of millions of dollars from personal injury victims.

The issue before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals was whether federal prosecutors should be forced to grant immunity to a defense witness, Las Vegas surgeon Mark Kabins.

The trial judge had ruled that the government must give Kabins immunity even though he is a top target of the so-called "medical mafia" investigation. The 9th circuit returned its unanimous decision in a quick turnaround. The U.S. Attorney's Office is expected to issue a statement.
