I-Team: Judge Denies Talent Agent's Plea Deal

LAS VEGAS -- A Hollywood talent broker accused of fraud in Las Vegas will face trial despite a deal with prosecutors.

The I-Team first investigated Carl Carranza last July when local parents complained they paid for a shot at stardom but got nothing in return. Carranza appeared Wednesday morning believing he had a deal in place that would likely result in a misdemeanor conviction.

He faces four felony fraud charges for allegedly misrepresenting his talent services.

But Judge Ann Zimmerman declined to go along and instead, Carranza is now proceeding to trial. During what evolved into a lengthy hearing, Judge Zimmerman questioned the terms of the plea agreement.

Had she approved it, Carranza would be required to pay restitution to his victims -- at least $3,000 worth -- in exchange for a guilty plea to a lesser charge. But after taking note of Carranza's previous convictions, two for false advertising in California, Judge Zimmerman withheld her approval.

She told Carranza's attorney his client should find another line of work.

"I'm just not willing to accept these negotiations based upon your prior criminal history and your current business enterprises," she said.

Carranza is currently on probation in California and is paying restitution there according to court records. The judge set his district court arraignment for next month.
