I-Team: Panic Buttons Installed at Legislative Building

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks remains in office, but he can't go into his actual office at the legislative building after being barred from it Monday night.

The lawmaker, who represents District 17 in North Las Vegas, was arrested earlier this week after reports of domestic battery.

The situation in the legislative building is so tense that police installed panic buttons in some legislative offices.

Brooks, banned from the building, faces a fight for his Assembly seat.

Legislative police, who said they handed Brooks a letter at the Reno airport banning him from the capital buildings Monday night, said he was "upset" upon its receipt.

The letter was signed by Assembly Chairman William Horne.

Horne is leading a group of lawmakers investigating Brooks for alleged unethical and unusual behavior.

In Brook's latest interview with the I-Team, he claimed police officers beat him up during his last arrest and said that he'd "shoot back" if it happened again.

Officers arrested Brooks Sunday, accusing him of beating his wife and trying to take a police officer's gun.

According to the Legislative Police, 29 highly trained officers are protecting the capital from all threats.

In a letter to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Legislative Counsel Bureau informs the agency that surveillance cameras have been installed and "extraordinary measures" implemented.

The Clark County Commission is expected to discuss selecting a new assemblyman next Tuesday.
