I-Team: Records stolen from Nevada Bar Association

LAS VEGAS -- Highly sensitive personal information of more than a dozen local attorneys was stolen from a storage locker. The valuable information was taken from the lawyer's own trade group -- the Nevada Bar Association.

When people take the bar exam to become attorneys, they have to divulge lots of personal information such as juvenile court records and financial dealings. Some of the information is highly sensitive.

The I-Team questioned why the confidential information wasn't better protected. A statement was posted on the bar association's website Monday revealing the theft and mentioned that Metro Police were conducting an investigation.

According to the executive director of the association, the records were kept in a commercial storage locker. The theft was discovered when one victim, who wants to remain anonymous, found out his bank account had been drained.

He said, Metro Police arrested one man with an identity card nearly identical to his own.

Metro police will not discuss the case, but fraud prevention expert Tom Consadine, who worked with the victim, said the theft should not have happened.

"That's just completely negligent. All that sensitive information of all these people protected by a Master lock? It's insane. You can't take care of sensitive information like that," Consadine said.

The Nevada Bar Association says its inventory indicates 18 records of individuals were stolen. The records were all on paper and not electronic. The theft mostly impacts people who took the Nevada Bar Exam in 2010 and 2011. The bar association says it will provide free credit monitoring to any theft victims.

No one from the association would go on camera.
