I-Team: Rory Reid Discusses Budget Plan for Nevada

LAS VEGAS - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid makes his point clear. With foreclosures at all-time highs, taxes aren't on the table.

"I am unwilling in that circumstance, based on what I've heard from our people, to put an additional burden on our folks at this time. I'm not going to do it," Reid said.

Instead, Reid wants to cut 10 unnamed state agencies and an unknown number of redundant administrative positions through layoffs. "There will be some (layoffs), but I don't know yet," Reid said. "I have experience with this at the county. Those are the hardest decisions to make."

He also wants to save $480 million by keeping the cuts and furloughs for state workers. It's a controversial decision many Democrats haven't supported. Reid admits his proposals mirror some of those by Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons. "That's something I agree with him on," Reid said. "I agree with that proposal and what the Legislature did on that. It's not very often that I agree with the governor. That's one."

Reid also supports options for four-day, 10-hour-a-day work weeks. But, that could create a problem for some agencies as evidenced by California's major hassles at the DMV. Reid says he's open to the possibility of closing DMV offices on Fridays and Saturdays.

Both leading candidates for governor face the same dilemma: Try to get more, while knowing the state will have less.

In a statement on Thursday, Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval responded to Reid's proposals, focusing on Reid's plan for education revenue. "Since Rory's plan relies on $615 million in revenues which don't exist and over half a billion in cuts which are based on faulty assumptions, it's impossible to take this plan seriously," Sandoval said.

Sandoval has released short-term budget proposals in the past. The two will likely spar on this issue quite a bit more between now and November.
