I-Team: Suspended Nurses Get Licenses Back

LAS VEGAS -- Two nurses named as persons of interest in an investigation of unexplained medical events at Sunrise Hospital are again licensed medical professionals.

Late Tuesday, the Nevada Nursing Board reactivated the licenses of two nurses who have spent the last few months living under a cloud of suspicion.

Las Vegas police named the two as persons of interest in their investigation of 14 catheter disruptions in the NICU at Sunrise, one of which lead to the death of a premature infant.

Nursing Board President Debra Scott says the board has no evidence yet that would allow it to withhold their licenses. So as of late Tuesday, the nurses are free to seek employment.

In July, the board suspended the licenses of Sharon Ochoa-Reyes and Jessica Rice, both nurses in Sunrise's Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. According to public records, the board determined the two would be a danger to the public if allowed an unrestricted nursing license.

Since then, the board subpoenaed hundreds of documents from both Sunrise Hospital and the Metro Police Department.

Scott says it does not have enough evidence at this point to warrant a complaint and hearing against the nurses.

Both the nursing board and Metro says they are still investigating the incidents.

Sunrise Hospital terminated the nurses based on their initial license suspensions by the nursing board. In a written statement, Sunrise says only that it can confirm the nurses are no longer employed by the hospital, but would not comment as to whether they will re-instate them.
