I-Team: Thousands of Foreclosed Homeowners May Have Been Defrauded

LAS VEGAS -- Tens of thousands of Nevada homeowners may actually not own their homes. That revelation was made after the Nevada Attorney General indicted two title officers on charges of telling their employees to forge signatures.

The charges are against California residents Gary Trafford and Gerri Sheppard. County records list Sheppard as formerly working with Fidelity National Title and Lender Processing Services. The crimes allegedly happened between 2005 and 2008.

"One consistent thing we have been seeing is fraudulent documents filed at the Recorder's Office which were subsequently used to foreclose on people's homes in Nevada, and that's a big problem and it's also a crime," said Chief Deputy Attorney General John Kelleher.

The indictment alleges Trafford and Sheppard directed their employees to forge names on foreclosure documents. The fraudulent notices of default were allegedly forged to let their clients speed up the foreclosure process on tens of thousands of Nevadans.

The AG's Office claims one notary admitted to forging 400 signatures a day for several years.

The Clark County Recorder declined to comment for this story because they are now a witness in the case.
