I-Team: Woman Launches Own Investigation into Mail Theft

LAS VEGAS -- Identity theft knows no limits. Once a crook has your personal information, he can max out your charge cards, drain your bank accounts and ruin your credit.

For a number of reasons, these types of crimes often go unsolved. One local Las Vegas woman hopes she'll be the exception.

Helene Beck doesn't expect to find any mail in her mailbox. She stopped her mail service last week when she discovered crooks had stolen her identity by way of her mailbox.

"As if I don't have enough of a mess," she said.

Notices from her bank, a cell phone company and her credit cards suggest the fraud continues. Meanwhile, Beck waits for police and postal inspectors to open her case.

"You can't just sit here and say it's ok, I've been victimized and I'm just going to sit here," she said.

Instead, with the help of her children, Beck set up an undercover sting in a front room. Eight minutes into the tape, she hits a jackpot.

"At first we were very excited, the screaming, the yelling, 'we got 'em, we got 'em, we got 'em.' But then when you look at him, you realize it's not such a good thing," Beck said.

To help catch her suspected thief, Beck shared the video with law enforcement.

"The video is incredibly helpful," United States Postal inspector Andrea Avery said. "Anything we can get that can help us identify who is stealing the mail is very helpful."

Avery tells the I-Team, Beck's case is now an active investigation.

"I want them to catch him, I want them to catch him because it's a federal offense and they shouldn't be taking it so lightly," Beck said.

Until then, Beck returns to the post office, and attempts again to secure her mail and her identity.

"It's a mess. It's a real mess," she said.

The postal service stresses locked mailboxes to secure mail. You can get them at a local hardware store or you can rent a post office box. If you recognize the man in the video, please contact postal inspectors at 1-877-876-2455 or contact Colleen McCarty at cmcarty@8newsnow.com.
