Job-Hunting Tips Can Help Unemployed Workers

(Oct. 1) -- When Ben Baker moved to Las Vegas from Philadelphia last month, he never imagined he'd be unable to find a job in gaming.

"Considering the hiring freeze at most casinos, I'm having a tough time of things, but I'm trying to keep my head up and keep applying," Baker said.

For many people, finding a job can be a full-time job in itself, and it can sometimes be frustrating. Fortunately, the state of Nevada has some excellent programs designed to help people get back on track.

The state Job Link office on Maryland Parkway allows people to check a local job bulletin board and access other job databases online. Retail employee Elizabeth Valdivia was laid off two weeks ago and is hoping the Job Link office can help her.

"It's very surprising, because usually when I go and apply, they'll usually interview me there, and I'll get hired in the moment, and right now I've gone to like 10 job interviews," Valdivia said.

Job placement expert Twila Newell says job hunters should be tenacious when it comes to finding a new job. Newell say in times like this, having a strong resume and good references is key. And candidates must be extremely persuasive when dealing with prospective employers.

"I think absolutely you need to point out what your attributes are, how are you going to affect that employer, how are you going to affect their bottom line," Newell said.

And placement experts also say job stability is something nearly every employer looks for.
