Las Vegas Courthouse Shooting Raises Security Concerns

LAS VEGAS -- Monday's fatal shooting at the Lloyd George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas is putting a spotlight on court security.

"We feel terrible that this situation has happened and made our court personnel feel less safe," said State Bar of Nevada President Kathleen England.

While details of Monday's shooting are still coming to light, many are already reacting in disbelief.

"It's horrifying that anyone would threaten our federal judges or court personnel or make that attack," England said. She has an office that is blocks away from the federal building and she frequently practices there. "I've been through those doors many times," she said. "It was a shock that it would happen in our community."

While the tragedy left a court officer and the gunman dead, England believes concerns regarding safety at the building should not be an issue. "Those of us who participate in that system are confident that our best interests and safety of everyone going in and out of that courthouse are being properly protected," she said.

According to a recent government review, threats to federal judges and prosecutors have increased dramatically in the past six years. Regardless of the motive in this shooting, England says those who are there to protect risk a lot.

"They rise to the occasion and put their lives on the line every day to protect us, to allow the judicial system here in southern Nevada to go on," she said. It's something England says never goes unnoticed. "We appreciate their work every day and perhaps even more so now," she added.

Sources say the U.S. federal marshal who was shot underwent surgery Monday morning and is recovering at University Medical Center.
