LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas officially threw its hat in the ring Wednesday to bring the Republican National Convention to the city in 2016.
It is not a done deal and there are a lot of roadblocks that could prevent it from happening.
Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval believes Las Vegas has a good shot at getting the convention.
"I think it is a tremendous opportunity to show the world that this Las Vegas is one of the greatest cities on the planet." Gov. Brian Sandoval, R-Nev.
He says Las Vegas offers a convenience other cities can't with more than 100,000 hotel rooms a quick ride away from convention space.
"People can stay within a one-mile radius of where the convention would be." Sandoval said.
Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki has been tasked with getting the RNC to Las Vegas.
"We think we have a very compelling story about the efficiency, the pricing, the convenience -- the logistical advantages," Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, R-Nev.
Las Vegas is also home to powerful GOP donors like Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn and Sands Corporation CEO Sheldon Adelson, who is the single largest donor to the Republican Party.
"Sheldon Adelson's relationships in the party are definitely important but so are others. I'm someone who gets to chair this effort. I've got a 20-year network around this country who are some of the decision makers of the Republican National Committee," Krolicki said.
Some things may still stand in the way of bringing the convention home.
Not only do some conservative Republicans look down on internet gaming, which is outlined in their 2012 platform.
There have also been internal struggles within the Nevada GOP itself, but still state leaders feel the Las Vegas valley has a good shot.
Other GOP leaders like Nevada Senator Dean Heller, R-Nev. are also supporting the bid.
However, Las Vegas is not the only city thinking about hosting the list includes: Kansas City, Missouri; Salt Lake City, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona and Charlotte, North Carolina.
The RNC will begin looking into these interested cities starting in January. The city could have a better idea if we can secure that RNC bid by the middle of next year.
