Las Vegas neighborhood gets much needed fire station

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas firefighters have struggled to get to some eastside homes fast enough for the past 20 years. Their response time is typically more than four minutes which the fire chief says is just too high.

A new fire station could cut response time by as much as three minutes. The new fire station will open near Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard, an area that has been underserved.

Cindy's Hair Affair opened just five months ago on Eastern Avenue, near Bonanza, smack in the middle of an area Las Vegas firefighters find it hard to respond to quickly.

"We use curling irons, flat irons and you know, all of that equipment that uses a lot of heat. It's kind of scary to think they're so far away," hair stylist Bonnie Medina said.

Stylists say a fire could destroy everything they've worked so hard for.

"There goes, you know, our whole business, our whole job," Medina said.

Right now, fire leaders say, on average, it takes more than four minutes to respond.

"This is an area of the city that we don't serve as well as we would want to," said Chief William McDonald, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The chief says every delayed minute increases the chance a fire will spread to another room, but that will change when Fire Station 108 opens in mid-August.

"This is right in the center of this call area and it will reduce response times to an acceptable level. Our travel time of about 4 minutes is our goal," McDonald said.

He says the new station is state-of-the-art. The fire trucks in the holding bays will be run off of computers and have safety upgrades installed via Wi-Fi.

Stylists at the salon feel better knowing firefighters will soon be just around the block.

"I feel safer," Medina said. "Knowing that they'll be here in 4 minutes."

Twenty new firefighters come on staff in mid-August to serve the area. The total cost is more than $6 million but, contractors were able to build it under budget.
