Las Vegas Police Officer Involved in Shooting

LAS VEGAS, Nv. -- A Las Vegas police officer has been involved in a shooting near Cheyenne and Michael. The man was rushed to UMC with critical injuries.

The incident started with a routine traffic stop around 2 p.m. Investigators say during a routine check, the officer discovered the man had outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

When the officer approached the suspect, he became combative. A struggle ensued and the officer used his Taser on the man, but police say it didn't work. The man got away and led police on a brief foot chase. Investigators say the man then reached for a weapon.

"With that individual attempting to pull out a firearm from his pocket, you know, that's last resort and then the officer fired to defend himself and the other people in the area," said Metro Captain Randy Montandon.

Officers say the suspect was shot multiple times. In addition to a gun, authorities say he was also carrying knife.

As standard procedure, the officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
