Las Vegas Route 91 shooting victim laid to rest

LAS VEGAS - A security guard killed while trying to help others escape the Route 91 Festival shooting was laid to rest Thursday morning.

The funeral for Eric Silva, 21, was held at the Davis Funeral Home on Eastern Avenue and Patrick Lane.
The chapel was overflowing with people as the young man was remembered.

Silva was a Las Vegas security guard stationed near the front of the stage at the concert when the gunfire broke out.

"When the bullets were flying on 1 October and people were fleeing for their lives, Erick did not run,  instead he stayed to help," Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said.

Silva was helping people in the crowd escape over a barricade when he was shot and killed.

"He was a hero. He was a leader. He was a person who stepped out and made a difference that day," said one speaker.

Silva grew up in southern Nevada. He graduated from Las Vegas High School and hoped to one day become a Metro police officer. It was a dream cut short on what was supposed to be just another Sunday on the Strip.

"You still have some assignments to do Erick. You have to watch over your mom and your brother and your family," said Gina Argento, with Silva's employer, Contemporary Services Corporation or CSC.

The company's training center will be named the Erick Silva Training Center in his memory.
