Las Vegas Strip to Get New York-Style Public Park

LAS VEGAS -- MGM Resorts International announced Thursday that it's building a park and public promenade outside of its New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos.

The $100 million project will feature a world-class arena, dining and bar scene and a retail district.

MGM CEO Jim Murren said modern patrons want to move freely around casinos and have spontaneous experiences.

"I think it's a good idea. I think the more options you have to spend your money, why not? Everybody here comes to do that," tourist Alberto Gonzalez said.

The public park will feature trees, benches, food trucks and shops. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks and last through 2014.

"Today's customer wants to be out in the open and wants to be independent. They don't want to be told what to do. They don't want to be captured and trapped in any type of resort, so our job as resort operators is to respond to today's customer," said Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International Jim Murren.

He said he was inspired by New York City's small, cosmopolitan Madison Square Park.
