Las Vegas Valley Prepares for Cold Snap

LAS VEGAS -- The Silver State could turn into the Shiver State Thursday night as a big cold front moves into the Las Vegas valley.

Temperatures are expected to dip by 25 degrees. In some neighborhoods, those temps could be near freezing. The high temperature Friday will be near 60 degrees and it will drop as the evening nears. There is also a wind warning for the Spring Mountains. That warning also includes Red Rock Recreational Area and Mt. Charleston.

It may be a good time to take some steps to winterize your home. It can be done for under $30.

  • Cover exposed pipes outdoors
  • Use weather stripping or door inserts to stop drafts
  • Check the furnace to be sure it is in working order
  • Reverse the direction of ceiling fans to blow clockwise to blow the warm air downward

Bob Adolf with Ace Hardware says he makes sure to winterize his home every October before the cold temperatures arrive.

"Whether it's serious or not, I think you should always have your home insulated and well prepared for any kind of weather," he said.

If you have sensitive plants, they should be covered with a burlap sack. Keep pets indoors.
