Lee Canyon closed due to weather; ski resort reopens Tuesday

LAS VEGAS - Lee Cayon is expected to reopen Tuesday following its closing Monday.  Extreme weather conditions involving high winds and snow forced Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort to close for the day. The weather caused power issues.

A recent string of winter storms has resulted in 37 inches of new snow at Lee Canyon and more is on the way. The snow base is currently 94 inches.

Anyone who purchased tickets for Jan. 23 will be notified.

"I've been up here with snow, but not when it was snowing this bad," Staff Sgt. Michael Ledesma said.

Ledesma said he and his wife Jacqueline were told to chain up or turn around, but many other people who didn't have chains or four-wheel drive decided it wasn't worth the ticket.

NHP Trooper: "Do you have cables or chains for your tires?"
Driver: "No."
Trooper: "Ok you can't go up there.  If you want you can turn around right here alright."

It's not unusual for NHP to restrict access along Kyle Canyon Road.  But, the more than 3-feet of snow since last Thursday is relatively rare.

"I thought we could go up to the mountain, but it's closed," Zoey Huaang said.

Lee Canyon officials say they haven't had to close due to weather or power related issues since 2005, and the area received 78 inches of snow in a week and a half.

So far this year, Lee Canyon has received 81 inches of snow in the last 12 days.
