Legal Fireworks Have 'Safe and Sane' Label

Amidst all the fire concerns fireworks stands will open for business across the valley Tuesday. The sale of 4th of July fireworks raises some concerns in southern Nevada even if the fireworks being sold here are the so called "safe and sane" variety.

Not all fireworks are legal in Clark County. But if you are hoping to celebrate with a traditional bang, local fire departments are warning to be safe and make sure you buy the legal fireworks.

They are the sights and sounds the 4th of July is known for -- fireworks. But the colorful novelties mean extra work for our local firefighters.

Tim Szymanski, with the Las Vegas Fire Department, says, "The 4th of July is the busiest time of the year for firefighters here in the valley. On an average day we get 600 to 700 calls. Last year on the 4th of July we got 1,000 calls."

Which fireworks are legal in Clark County? The ones with "Safe and Sane" labels. But labels don't mean they're danger-free. Tim Szymanski says, "There's a misconception when it says "Safe and Sane" it means they're safe from fire, and children can play with them. They should be used with adult supervision at all times."

Szymanski adds, "Any of those fireworks bought on the Indian reservations or brought in from out of state, if they don't have the "Safe and Sane" seal -- they are illegal -- anything that fires through the air, explodes, or twirls on the ground."

And any damage you cause with illegal fire works can be a blow to your pocket book. "If you damage somebody else's property with these fireworks that are illegal, any insurance company is gonna come after you and sue you for the damages," said LVFD's Tim Szymanski.

Each fireworks stand has to be inspected by the fire department. Also, fireworks do have expiration dates. If your "Safe and Sane" fireworks are expired, you should not buy them.

If you are caught with illegal fireworks it is considered a misdemeanor -- meaning you could pay up to $10,000 in fines and possibly serve some jail time.
