Local beauty schools shut down, 350 students impacted

LAS VEGAS - One of the oldest beauty schools in the country is being forced to permanently shut down and the future of hundreds of students in Nevada remains unclear.

This follows an investigation by the Department of Education which uncovered "serious violations" at Maranello School of Beauty campuses across the United States including three in Nevada.

There were people still working inside the Marinello beauty school off of Bonanza and Nellis Thursday morning, but the doors were locked and no one would talk to 8 News NOW.

Student Amy Wile tells 8 News NOW she just found out  the school is shutting down.

"If there was indication two or three weeks ago, I wouldn't have signed up here," Wile said.

She is among more than 350 students across Nevada now left hanging.

According to the Department of Education, which pulled the for profit school's federal funding this week, all 56 Marinello campuses nationwide are affected.

"They caught them doing something not legal from accounting standpoint," said Gary Landry, Nevada Board of Cosmetology.

The allegations include Marinello knowingly requesting federal aid for students based on invalid high school diplomas, under-rewarding Title 4 money to students and charging students excessive overtime.

Landry says the students who will hurt most are those midway into the program.

"They are going to take more hours and whether they are funded for that or pay out of pocket that's going to be another thing they are going to face," Landry said.

As for Wile, she's already looking into other local beauty schools and hoping for the best.

"You are putting all this money in it for a career so you can better yourself, you just never know," she said.

All schools in Nevada must close by Feb. 16.
