Local Eagle Scout candidate honors grandfather on Veterans Day

LAS VEGAS - A local Eagle Scout candidate unveiled a one-of-a-kind memorial on Veterans Day to honor his grandfather and all those who have served in the military.

On Memorial Day, Austin Neukam revealed a rendering of the custom memorial bench he designed and commissioned. On Veteran’s Day, Austin, along with local and national leaders, held a ceremony to display the completed work.

The bench, located in the Veterans Memorial Section at the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery, honors military members and can be found in the coroner where Austin’s grandfather is laid to rest. Bud Neukam served as a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific during WWII.

Austin designed the bench and partially funded it through donations and other fundraising efforts.

The dignitaries in attendance at Saturday’s unveiling included Senator Dean Heller, Congresswoman Dina Titus, Congressman Ruben Kihuen, Mayor Pro Tem Lois Tarkanian, Deputy Chief Richard Suey.
