Local Girl to Raise Money for Diabetes

LAS VEGAS -- An inspiring local girl will ride more than 100 hundred miles raise money for diabetes research.

Fourteen-year-old Jacqi Hammel has type 1 diabetes but she never lets it hold her back. She swims, runs, cycles, and she's in student council. She excels in math and science and wants to be a doctor.

Fundraising isn't the only reason she's riding 109 miles, Hammel said, "I wanna show other kids my age and younger or even older, that are diabetic, that really anything they wanna do, they can do."

Jacqui will take part in the "Ride to Cure Diabetes" this November in Tucson.

Volunteers at the local juvenile diabetes office donated things for the parking lot sale, everything from a console for an I-pod, to "Twilight" DVD's. Her goal is $5,000.

Get in on the bargains at the Shoppertunity Saturday, Aug. 21 in the Marquis and Aurbach parking lot at 10001 West Park Run Drive. That's near Hualapai and Charleston.
