HENDERSON, Nev. - The Rolling Stones are coming to Las Vegas this weekend. When the legendary rock band hits the stage at MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night, they will be backed by a choir from Green Valley High School.
"I got this Facebook message from a woman that I didn't know saying, ‘We'd love to have your choir sing back up for the Rolling Stones. This is confidential. Don't say anything," said Green Valley High School Choir Director Kim Ritzer.
Ritzer initially thought it was a joke. She later learned a friend who teaches choir at the University of Southern California suggested Ritzer's choir. The Green Valley High School choir had an audition via Skype with a Rolling Stones representative from London.
"When I announced it to the kids, I think their parents were more excited than they were, because some of them didn't even know who the Rolling Stones were," Ritzer said.
"I'm going around going, ‘Hey, so who's performing with the Rolling Stones on Saturday?'" said Green Valley High School senior Alex Miller. "It's cool, like, a lot of my friends that are into the Rolling Stones are, like, ‘Can you get me tickets?' And I'm like, ‘No. sorry. It's an exclusive thing.'"
"I called my dad. He was screaming at me over the phone and said, ‘Are you kidding me?'" said Green Valley High School freshman Kyle Sorenson. "It was funny, and my mom told me - she said, ‘You better get an extra ticket or else I'll come with a chaperone.' They're beyond excited, and so am I."
The 24 singers have only had two weeks to learn the song they will perform during the Stones' encore Saturday night. The choir needs to arrive at 1:30 p.m. for its big gig with a classic rock-n-roll band.
