Lisa Romero-Muniz: New Mexico school secretary killed in Las Vegas

GALLUP, NM - Students, friends and family gathered Monday night to remember a Gallup school secretary killed in the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

It was an emotional night at Miyamura High School for many who still can’t wrap their heads around the senseless tragedy that took the life of their beloved colleague Lisa Romero-Muniz.

“When I was in middle school she helped me through a lot with my family. You could trust her with anything,” high school freshman Shelby Silva said.

Hugs, tears and memories were shared at Miyamura High School Monday night. Romero-Muniz had worked for Gallup-McKinley County Public Schools for 14 years.

The superintendent says she was a mentor and advocate for students.

“She gave me advice to like keep pushing through the hard things and so when I heard she passed it kind of hit me in my heart,” freshman Jazmine Arreguin said.

“I was trying not to get angry, it’s just that’s a lot of what I’m feeling right now is just, why? It’s just senseless,” said Darci Sanchez.

Romero-Muniz worked at the elementary, middle and high schools during her career, so she was able to follow many of the students and watch them grow up.

Romero-Muniz leaves behind a husband, kids and grandkids.

Her long-time friend says Romero-Muniz was a woman with a big heart.

“She is a very kind person and very firm, but in a kind way. That’s how all of the students knew her,” Jaclyn Pinto said.

Pinto says Romero-Muniz will be missed, and remembered by the country music that always filled her office.
