Locals heading to Mount Charleston for holiday weekend

LAS VEGAS - If you're heading to Mount Charleston this Thanksgiving holiday, be prepared to have a lot of company.

"I get up in the morning, I get my coffee. I come right out here and that's my view, the beautiful mountains in the background," said Elizabeth Forrest, who couldn't have a more fitting last name.

Elizabeth and her husband Bob are volunteers for the U.S. Forest Service. They've been living at the Fletcher View Campground for two months and will be working through the busy Thanksgiving weekend.

"I can't believe it. We are full. We are full. I mean, I think people are just going to cook their turkeys at home bring them over here and then just eat them as a picnic," she said.

Families hoping to book a campsite might be out of luck but all other recreational areas will be open to the public.

"It's beautiful up here this time of year so a lot of people want to come up and enjoy the recreation area and we encourage that, we just want people to be careful," said Fire Captain Christopher Culver, Mt. Charleston Fire Rescue.

He says his guys are expecting to work around the clock responding to emergencies during the holidays.

"Any emergency, medical situation, hiking in somewhere and hiking people out that get injured on the trails or just camping in general," he said.

And when the ground is white.

"As soon as the snow falls, that's when our call volume goes up quite a bit due to traumatic injuries at the ski resort and snow play areas up here on Mount Charleston."

Only patches of manmade snow are on the ground at Lee Canyon. The ski resort will remain closed through the rest of the month. But families can still enjoy the outdoors this holiday weekend.

"If you look around you the view is beautiful," Elizabeth Forrest said. "It's a perfect Thanksgiving.

If Mother Nature cooperates, Lee Canyon will open Dec. 8.
