Man accused of sex trafficking wife may be connected to child's death in Illinois

LAS VEGAS - A call from a woman living in Las Vegas led police in Illinois to the body of a small child, Metro Police said.

Officers in Centerville, Illinois were led to the gruesome discovery when the woman went to a Las Vegas women’s shelter for help.  The woman advised told shelter workers that she was sex trafficked by her husband for the last two years.

The victim whose identity wasn't released told authorities that she and her husband, 34-year-old Jason Quate, lived in an apartment near East Sahara Avenue and South Eastern Avenue. But the two had previously lived in the state of Illinois.

According to Metro Police, the woman also told officers that there were two juveniles still living in the home and that Quate was abusive to them.

The victim said during their time in Illinois Quate killed one of their three children.  She said Quate put the little girl's body in a container in a house in Centerville, Illinois.

After Metro Police had reached out to officers in the area, they searched the home, and the child's body was found.

Man arrested in connection to child's body being found in Centreville garage

The local coroner in St. Clair County, Calvin Dye Sr., says the woman called Las Vegas police early Tuesday, telling them her 7-year-old child died in 2015 and the body could be found in the home's garage. Dye says police found human remains wrapped in two blankets.

Apparently, the body found was so badly decomposed, authorities couldn't tell the gender.  Dye says a forensic anthropologist will try to determine the child's gender, and police are trying to determine how the child died.

Dye didn't have details about the woman or the investigation.

A search warrant was served in Las Vegas, and early Tuesday morning, Jason Quate arrested.

The two children in the home exhibited signs of abuse and neglect, so they were taken into protective
custody, Metro said.

Jason Quate was transported to the Clark County Detention Center where he currently faces the following charges:

  • Sex trafficking of an adult
  • Accept/receive earnings of a prostitute

Metro Police says this is an ongoing investigation, so charges may be amended as more information is received.

Detectives will continue to coordinate with authorities in Illinois.
