Man arrested following rooftop standoff

LAS VEGAS - A suspected burglar was arrested after a rooftop standoff that disrupted a neighborhood in west Las Vegas for hours Thursday morning.  Police say the man was armed with a large knife and kept officers at bay by throwing roof tiles.

The incident started as a domestic violence call just before midnight at a neighborhood near Westcliff Dr. and Durango, according to Metro Lt. David Gordon. It escalated into a burglary when the man allegedly entered a house and armed himself with a knife.

At some point the man jumped onto the roof of single-story house in the 200 block of Roland Wiley Rd.  As police moved in, the man pulled off tiles and rained them down onto officers below.  Flying tiles damaged neighborhood cars and police vehicles.

The Metro SWAT team arrived and the suspect was arrested around 3:15 a.m.  He was transported to the hospital to be checked out before being taken to jail.  An officer was also treated for a minor injury he suffered during a foot pursuit before the standoff.
