Man arrested for homicide, Davontae Wheeler, claims he's 'innocent'

LAS VEGAS - A man suspected of taking part in a crime that left a nursing student dead is expected back in court on Aug. 22.

Davontae Wheeler, one of the four men arrested in the attempted robbery and murder of 24-year-old Gabriel Valenzuela, spoke with 8 News NOW, and he says he's "innocent.

It all happened in the early morning hours of Aug. 9 at a home near Russell and Lindell.

According to Metro Police, Valenzuela was outside checking the mail when Wheeler and three other suspects shot and killed him.

Wheeler, 22, is charged with murder, but he says he had nothing to do with it.  During an interview from inside the Clark County Detention Center Wheeler admitted to being with the other suspects before the shooting, saying he was trying to buy a gun from one of them, but he says he left shortly after because he got the feeling the gun for sale was stolen.

"I don't know why any of this is going on," Wheeler said. "I don't know why any of this is happening. I don't know how I'm even involved with this. The only thing I had a conversation with him about was the gun and when I felt like things were going to be bad and he was going to rob me, I left."

Two of the other suspects, a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old, are also being held at the county jail.  The fourth suspect is a juvenile.
