Man Extradited to Vegas in Cold Case Murder

LAS VEGAS -- A suspect has been arrested in connection with a cold case murder from 2004. The District Attorney's office said Marco Laguna-Romero was arrested in September in Milwaukee.

Romero was extradited to Las Vegas Tuesday to face a charge of  murder with a deadly weapon and several traffic-related charges.

According to a police report, a construction worker found the burned body of a woman near Sam Boyd Stadium in August 2004. The body was so badly burned it took several months to identify Latoshia Denise Williams and for the Clark County Coroner's Office to determine her cause of death.

In February 2006, a Metro detective received a handwritten statement from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend, Marco Laguna-Romero, had told her that he had murdered a woman.

According to the statement, the suspect met Williams along Boulder Highway in 2004. He said they went back to her hotel room, but shortly after they returned to the room, Romero said he caught Williams trying to steal his wallet.

He then started beating the woman and had to kill her because he was afraid she would report him to the police, according to the statement. After strangling her with a phone cord, he brought a blue bin from his apartment, put her body inside, covered her with gasoline and two days later drove to an empty area near Sam Boyd Stadium. He lit the woman's body on fire and waited to make sure it had burned.

After making the statement, the woman ended contact with police. Detectives tried several times to find her but could not.

In February of 2012, a cold case review of the file produced a partial DNA profile from three matches found at the crime scene.

In June, detectives were able to find the woman who made the statement six years earlier. They were able to take DNA swabs of the woman's son who is the biological son of the suspect. A forensic report tied Romero to the matches found at the scene.

Romero is due in court at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday for the murder charge.
