Man released from prison; he served 22 years for crime he didn't commit

LAS VEGAS - After 22 years in prison for a murder, he didn't commit, Demarlo Berry has finally been released and is now a free man.

Sitting next to his wife of seven years, Odilia, Berry thanked those who continued to fight for his release and prove his innocence.

"If they weren't as thorough as they were, we wouldn't be here nobody would be concerned about me or anything," Berry said.
"I'd just be another number in prison, so I'm really grateful to them, and they're the heroes for today."

Berry was convicted back in 1995 for the murder of Charles Burkes, but he claimed another man, Steve Jackson committed the crime.

Four years ago Jackson admitted to law enforcement officers that he was responsible for Burke's death. Jackson was serving a prison sentence for a different murder when he made the confession.

An investigation by the newly formed Clark County Correction Review Unit dug into the case and found that Berry was innocent, which is why he was released Friday.

Berry said now that's he's out, he's looking forward to steak, french fries, and sleep.  Berry said he's also looking foward to nd adapting to his new life.

"It was rough," said Odilia Berry, wife. "It was hard, but it's over. God is good.

While in prison, Berry said he learned to be a barber in prison, and he already has a job lined up that he will start in the next few weeks.
