Man to be released from prison after another confesses to crime

LAS VEGAS - A man who has been in prison for 22 years will be released following another man's confession to the crime.

This is the first case that has resulted in a release since the Clark County district attorney's office created the Conviction Review Unit. That unit looked into DeMarlo Berry's murder conviction for the death of Charles Burkes in 1994.

According to the Clark Country district Attorney, Steven Jackson committed the crime and admitted to it while serving time in prison for a 1996 murder conviction.

The CRU conducted an investigation of the case which included an interview of Jackson who was able give details about the crime scene that would not have been known by someone who was not there at the time of the murder.

This is the first case reviewed by the CRU that has resulted in a person's release from prison.

"My goal in creating the CRU was to provide a way for certain cases to be reviewed in dependently and evaluated o a variety of factors, including new evidence," said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. "In this case, a confession by Mr. Jackson, and verification of that and other information by our CRU, resulted in our decision to no longer oppose Mr. Berry's request for conviction relief."
