Many Wait in Valley Hospitals For Mental Health Services

LAS VEGAS -- The average number of inpatients served by Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services is lower than five years ago but the same cannot be said for individuals waiting in valley hospitals for mental health services.

From July through January -- the first seven months of fiscal 2013 -- the Southern Nevada branch of state mental health services had daily inpatient volume of slightly more than 146 individuals as averaged per month. That was slightly higher than in fiscal 2011 and 2012 but well below the fiscal 2008 monthly average of more than 183 inpatients daily.

Yet the average daily volume of uninsured adults waiting in Las Vegas Valley Hospitals for mental health services was 56.5 per month through January of fiscal 2013, compared to 46.5 per month in fiscal 2008. However, this figure has gone up and down after reaching a high of 61.9 in fiscal 2010.

The average daily volume of individuals under the state's psychiatric observation in Southern Nevada peaked in fiscal 2009 at 33.2 per month. But the fiscal 2013 monthly average of 20.8 is slightly higher than the 19.2 monthly average in fiscal 2008.
