'Medical Mafia' Insider Sentenced to Prison

LAS VEGAS -- Howard Awand, a businessman described as the head of a group known as the Medical Mafia, has been sentenced to 48 months in prison and ordered by a federal judge to pay a $2.5 million fine.

Awand was sentenced Tuesday for failing to pay millions in income taxes. Award's wife, Linda, was also sentenced to serve 36 months.

Awand worked as a medical consultant with doctors and lawyers on personal injury cases and made millions of dollars. During his trial, he told the court that his bookkeeper had dropped the ball and his tax accountant had quit. Awand admitted that he owed the taxes and had planned to pay at some point.
