LAS VEGAS - Metro Police investigated a shooting in the northwest valley Tuesday evening.
It happened around 4:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of Henniker Way near Rampart and Lake Mead.
According to officers, a woman in her 80's was shot and killed in the middle of the street.
"I came around the corner and I saw a person lying in the middle of the street and I thought at first they had this person down to stay put, but I realized that person wasn't moving," said El Conde Luiz, witness.
Police said the woman was shot and killed by her grandson, a man in his 40's.
"It appears there was some kind of domestic violence going on inside of the house," said Lt. Dan McGrath, Metro Police. "She exited the residence, and he shot her outside."
A young man was also inside the home, but was able to get out ok.
"A number of people did call 911, McGrath said. "Citizens did try to render aid, but realized she was deceased."
Metro says the male suspect was running in the area, but he got away from authorities and went into a backyard where he barricaded himself with a gun.
"When more police officers pulled up they had their guns drawn up towards the house that was right across the street," Luiz said. "When I went up the street, the cops were swarming already and helicopters were flying around."
Officers were able to make contact with the suspect.
SWAT and a crisis negotiating team were called to the scene to work towards a peaceful ending. Parts of the neighborhood were evacuated.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody around 8 p.m. He is currently being arrested for murder with a deadly weapon.
"Maybe we will learn something in the next few hours of why somebody did this to their family member," Lt. McGrath said.
