Metro identifies officer involved in shooting at apartment complex

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have identified the police officer who shot an armed man as 23-year-old Travon Chambers.

Officer Chambers shot an armed man at an apartment complex in the 9500 block of W. Tropicana Avenue near Fort Apache Road early Monday morning.

Police had received a call that an ex-husband was threatening his former wife and children. When police arrived at the scene, the man exited the apartment and went outside.  Police said, the man refused commands to drop his gun and moved in the direction of officers forcing Officer Chambers to fire his gun.

The man was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

Officer Chambers has been with Metro since Dec. 2015.

He is currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of the incident.

Metro will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. to discuss the details of the shooting.
