Metro Officer Involved in Deadly Shooting Fired

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police announced that the officer involved in a controversial deadly shooting has been fired.

According to police, Sheriff Gillespie approved the termination of Officer Jesus Arevalo Tuesday. The decision came after the department's pre-termination board recommended the termination.

Officer Arevalo fatally shot Stanley Gibson Dec. 2011. Gibson was a disabled Gulf War veteran who had driven into the wrong apartment complex. Residents at the apartments near Rainbow Boulevard and Smoke Ranch Road called police to report something suspicious.

When officers responded, Gibson tried to drive away and ignored police commands to get out of the car.

Officers had decided to use a low-lethal shotgun, which fires a small beanbag round. However, Arevalo used live rounds hitting and killing Gibson.

Metro Police say a breakdown in police radio communication led to the deadly shooting. The Clark County District Attorney's Office found in its review of the shooting that communication problems and an officer's mistake led to the shooting.

The DA also decided not to press any criminal charges against Arevalo or the other officers involved in the shooting.

Gibson's widow says her husband suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is suing Metro Police over the shooting.

The pre-termination board ruled that Arevalo lacked the ability to make sound decisions in situations routinely faced by police officers.
