Metro Police bringing back Gang Unit this weekend

LAS VEGAS - A year after Sheriff Joe Lombardo executed his decentralization plan, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is bringing back its gang unit this weekend.

Sheriff Lombardo received criticism about his decision to dissolve the unit. He says focus 2017 is to reducing violent crime in the Las Vegas community.

Part of the plan is putting the Gang Unit back on the streets. This time it will be combined with a Vice Unit.

Sheriff Lombardo says he recently took a trip to Washington, D.C. and met with other police chiefs. They talked about the increase in violent crime across the county.

Sheriff Lombardo says he heard a lot of the leaders talk about gang crime going up as well. He adds he took all of that information and feedback into consideration when he decided to recentralize the unit.

"On top of that, we put the Vice Unit. We married them together because you're starting to see some symbiotic action between those types of thugs, pimps, and gang thugs operating the same realm. So, that's going to be a new bureau stood up, and I anticipate standing them up in the next two weeks, and so we'll hopefully have some positive results in effect on crime as a result of it," Sheriff Lombardo said.

According to Sheriff Lombardo, when he decentralized the detectives, those from the gang unit went out into area commands to look into all kinds of crimes, but their workloads increased, and they lacked a centralized function.

Sheriff Lombardo also says the increase in violent crimes that happened last year in Metro's jurisdiction also played a part in this decision.
