LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police say that all three suspects involved in shootings with officers this year were attempting 'suicide by cop.'
Clark County Undersheriff Jim Dixon made the assertion during a news conference about the latest officer-involved shooting that happened March 4.
According to Dixon, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Jason Mahe, in the March 4 shooting got into a confrontation with police outside a Dotty's Casino near Rancho and Vegas drives. Police say he pulled out a gun and three officers responded by shooting him seven times.
Officers were looking for Mahe after they say he tried to use counterfeit money at a nearby convenience store.
Mahe survived the shooting and is facing several charges connected to the money and the shooting, plus the car he was driving was stolen, according to police.
"We've had these three shootings now since the beginning of the year, in all three shootings the suspects has been attempting suicide by cop," Dixon said. "His (Mahe) history, assault with weapons/subject stated he will commit suicide by cop if apprehended."
Police say the gun Mahe was holding was actually a Black Ops Colt 1911 replica pellet gun, which was recovered at the scene.
According to Metro, Mahe had an active parole violation warrant from Ohio with a notation that said he had stated that he will commit suicide by cop if apprehended.
Dixon said officers also encountered an armed robbery suspect, in the country illegally, on March 3.
In that case, police said Manuel Rodriguez terrorized a neighborhood demanding money from several people at gun point then pointed the gun at officers. Police had to open fire taking down Rodriguez that police said forced them to shoot.
"Whenever a firearm is involved and you perceive a threat and that your life might be in danger, a citizens life might be in danger we try and act accordingly to save lives," Capt. Csaba Maczala of the Robbery/Homicide Section said.
The first officer-involved shooting happened in Laughlin on Jan. 31. The suspect was shot and killed by police. The second was March 3 near an on ramp to U.S. 95. The suspect was injured by police.
