UPDATE: Armed suspect on RTC bus taken into custody

LAS VEGAS - Metro Police took 59-year-old Brett Sporich into custody Wednesday afternoon following a shooting and standoff on an RTC bus that lasted around four hours.

The incident took place at the intersection of N. Nellis Boulevard and E. Bonanza Road causing much of the intersection at Nellis Boulevard and Bonanza Road to be closed.

Nearby businesses were evacuated and three schools (El Dorado High School, Dell H. Robison Middle School and Stanford Elementary School) were put on lockdown.

According to witnesses, there was a man on the bus acting erratically.  The bus driver realized the man had a gun, so he stopped the bus, and that's when passengers on the bus fled.

"We're like 'oh my gosh!  Something's going on here, and this guy is nuts," said David D'Amico, bus passenger!  "So both doors were open, everybody kind of just fled, including myself. After that, I didn't see anything."

"He capped off with his gun, we all got off the bus, we all start running in all directions," said Claudell Hatter, bus passenger.  "A lot of people got off the bus at that time. So, I don't know who all was even left on the bus."

As they were fleeing, they heard two shots fired, one witness said. SWAT officers were called to the scene. No one was injured.

Sporich is being held on a $20,000 bail at the Clark County Detention Center and is facing a charge of discharging a weapon in an enclosed space.

The RTC released a statement about the incident.

“Today’s incident has caused a tremendous amount of stress for our community," said Angela Castro, RTC senior director of government affairs, media and marketing.  "Most importantly, we are grateful there are no reported injuries. We are working very closely with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and our contractor to understand the facts of what occurred. This incident further demonstrates the need for a live camera feed inside our buses that can be easily shared with law enforcement. The RTC is currently testing such a pilot program and hopes to obtain all necessary approvals to install the software system-wide by year-end.”
