MMA fighter War Machine arrested in California

LAS VEGAS -- The MMA fighter known as War Machine was arrested Friday in California, according to the U.S. Marshals in Simi Valley.

Metro Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Jonathan Koppenhaver on several charges including attempted murder, assault, battery, open and gross lewdness and strangulation. His ex-girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack, says War Machine severely beat her, and the man she was with, last Friday at her Las Vegas home.

According to the warrant for arrest released Friday, Koppenhaver came over to Mack's house at around 1:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8. He accused her of cheating on him. He punched the man who was there several times and choked him, police said. That man left the house.  Mack told police that Koppenhaver punched and kicked her several times. He then started going through her phone and every time he saw a social media post that he didn't like he would hit her. He then forced her to shower.

Mack also told police at one point Koppenhaver went into the kitchen to get a knife to kill her. She was able to escape the house and ran to neighbor's home. The neighbor called police just before 5 a.m. Friday.

When police first saw Mack, they report that both of her eyes were swollen shut. She had swollen lips and two missing teeth. Doctors also determined that she had a lacerated liver.

Koppenhaver lived in Simi Valley at one point and the Marshals investigation showed he might be staying in the area. Law enforcement officials found him in the Extended Stay America Hotel. He was arrested without incident.

However, witnesses say Koppenhaver was arguing with a woman inside a room and they called 911. Police say it wasn't long before they figured out who was staying at the motel.

"They opened the door and I just hear them yelling, and I looked and I hear them yelling and they go "open the door it's the police!" and they were banging on the door trying to get it open," witness Nicole Blankenship said.

Another witness said Koppenhaver was tased in the take down by authorities.

Koppenhaver was booked at the Ventura County Jail and will go through the extradition process to come back to Las Vegas, the Clark County District Attorney's office released warrant paperwork for Koppenhaver's return to back to Nevada.
