More homes, schools being built in Summerlin

LAS VEGAS - 2017 promises to be a big year for the master-planned community of Summerlin.

The community which is already home to more than 100,000 people will add nine new neighborhoods, 2 new schools and it's 20th community park.

It's all part of the Howard Hughes Corporation's master plan.

One of the centerpieces is Downtown Summerlin. Since it opened in 2014, Downtown Summerlin has been a hit. Now get ready for the area around it to expand.

"It's only the beginning, the rest of Downtown Summerlin will be another 180 acres of high-density urban environment. There could be 10,000 people living in urban homes there," said Tom Warden, Howard Hughes Corporation.

Warden is talking about the area surrounding the Vegas Golden Knights new practice facility just across the street from Downtown Summerlin.

"Yeah, this looks like the fringe of Downtown Summerlin, but actually this is going to be the center of Downtown Summerlin," Warden said. "This area is going to feature more than 4,000 urban dwelling units, none of them single family detached homes."

It'll be several years before it's built out, but at least one new apartment development has already opened nearby.

"The continued development of Summerlin includes everything from new neighborhoods and villages to single lots in exclusive communities like the Ridges, and yet to be developed lots that overlook the entire valley.

Homes in Summerlin range in price from the $300,000 to the multi-millions.

Around 1,200 new homes are being built just south of Bishop Gorman High School. Regency is a 55 and over community designed for aging baby boomers. The architectural style is called rugged contemporary.

Summerlin's success comes at a cost. Rents and home prices are higher than other parts of town and more people are moving in every day.

but several we talked to didn't seem to mind.

((36:48 jill crees/sumerlin shopper:"it's very beautiful and safe, i think lots of summerlin people like to enjoy hang out there."))///

summerlin only has about six thousand more acres left to develop.
and one thing about downtown summerlin.
nevada's first crate and barrell is opening this year. (i'm told that's a pretty big deal))///
