Mother, son plead 'not guilty' in former Chaparral football player's death

LAS VEGAS - Richard Newsome Jr. and his mother, Tianna Douglas, both entered not guilty pleas during their court appearances Thursday morning.

Newsome, 17, is charged with one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon and one count of assault with the use of a deadly weapon. He is accused of killing former Chaparral High School football player Richard Nelson, 18, who was home from college on a break. Newsome is being held with no bail.

His mother, Douglas, 37, is accused of accessory to murder and battery with substantial bodily harm. Her bail was set at $25,000.

Police say Newsome was in a physical altercation with Nelson's sister, and when Nelson intervened to stop the fight, Newsome pulled out a gun and fired it at Nelson striking him several times.

Douglas drove her son from the scene after the shooting, police said.

A trial date is set for June 5, 2017.
