3 pedestrians hit, killed in crash near Flamingo and Eastern

LAS VEGAS - Three pedestrians are dead following a crash involving several vehicles Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Now the question lingers if one of the drivers was impaired or suffered a medical episode before the wreck.

The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. at S. Eastern Avenue and E. Flamingo Road. The roads did not reopen until 4:20 a.m. Thursday.  Officers said all of the pedestrians struck died at the scene.

In addition to the three deaths, seven others suffered injuries, according to officer Larry Hadfield, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Two of the injured suffered critical injuries.

Investigators said the driver may have been impaired, but a man who claimed to be the driver's boss told 8 News NOW the driver had a medical condition.

"He wasn't impaired or nothing. He's epileptic and he had a seizure on his way home from work. He just left the job site with me. I'm his boss," said the man who didn't want to be identified.

The man added the two worked construction downtown and he saw the driver just 15 minutes before the crash.

"He even has clearance from the doctors that he's allowed to drive," the man explained.

The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition was not known as of Wednesday night.

"I just wanted everybody to know that he's not really a bad guy. He did just have a medical condition. This is just a really bad accident unfortunately for everyone involved."

Police said a silver Hyundai and a blue Ford were involved in the crash, but there may be many more cars involved.

"I think it warrants me saying that everybody needs to make sure that they are watching their driving habits, making sure that something like this doesn't happen to them, and use good judgment. As far the investigate part of this, we won't have a lot of the details until tomorrow," officer Hadfield said.

As of Wednesday night, police expected the intersection would be closed until about midnight Thursday.
