Jason Griffith spent nearly five hours telling the jury his side of the story. He explained that during their fight the day Debora Flores Narvaez died, she told him she was going to kill him and then herself.
He told the jury she reached for her purse, and he believed she had a knife or a gun in the purse.
"When she hits me, all these other times she has hit me, I'm in a position where I can get away. I'm in a position where I can just run. There is a hit, I can stand up and move. I'm sitting on the floor, and she's over me, and hits me in the face," Griffith explained.
Griffith said in court that he grabbed Narvaez from behind in the crooks of his elbows as he fell backward. He said Narvaez's hair was in his face as he pleaded with her to stop -- that he didn't want to fight anymore. Griffith told the jury he killed her in self defense. His attorney asked what he did after Narvaez died.
"Afraid they are going to blame you?" the attorney asked.
"Yeah, hell yeah, hell yeah and I'm scared, scared of this. I'm scared," Griffith responded.
"Do you stay in the studio? Do you leave? What are you doing?" the attorney asked.
"I sat there for 10 minutes waiting for her to get up. I'm praying, 'please God she's going to get up, she's going to be ok, she's going to move, she's going to get up.'" Griffith said.
Griffith decided to waive his right to self incrimination Wednesday and took the stand in his own defense. The move opens him up to cross-examination by the prosecution.
The former dancer with Cirque du Soleil is accused of strangling Narvaez, dismembering her body and putting it into plastic bins filled with concrete.
During his testimony Wednesday, Griffith told the jury that Narvaez was clingy and violent. He said she called and texted him 30 to 40 times a day and even broke his bedroom window when he wouldn't let her in the house.
He also said he called police several times on her, but he said that police never took him seriously.
Narvaez was a dancer at the "Fantasy" revue at the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Narvaez was reported missing when she didn't show up for a performance in December 2010.
Her body was found in a vacant home downtown in January 2011. Griffith was arrested shortly after Narvaez's body was found.
