National Diabetes-Related Clinical Trial Halted

A national diabetes-related clinical trial has been halted 18 months early over safety concerns.

Researchers used several diabetes drugs to see if lowering blood sugar levels -- lower than current standards would protect patients with type-2 diabetes from heart disease.

Las Vegas endocrinologist, Fred Toffel says, surprisingly, it had the opposite effect. "The safety commission found that this one group of intensive control not only did not have any improvement in their cardiovascular risk after, but they had a worsening of events," he said.

The patients involved in the trial had previously been diagnosed with heart disease. Problems occurred in about 250 out of about 10,000 patients.
