NDOT announces the 'Big Squeeze' on U.S. 95

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Department of Transportation held a news conference Wednesday to announce the long-term U.S. 95 lane closures related to Project Neon.

It's being called the "Big Squeeze."

The closures will have a major impact on traffic for the next 10 months. The project will narrow U.S. 95 to two lanes in both directions from Rancho Drive to the Spaghetti Bowl and it starts next week.

Crews will begin setting up on Monday night and the restrictions will start Tuesday morning. This is a labor-intensive project. There will be construction 6 days a week, around the clock.

Currently, NDOT says there are 10,000 drivers per hour on U.S. 95. This project will last 300 days.

"I would say the best way is to get through the construction zone as fast as possible," said Dale Keller, project manager, Project Neon. "We're using two different strategies, find alternative routes, also use the zipper merge to get through the construction zone faster."

The zipper method encourages drivers to use both lanes up to the point where they converge and then merge in a zipper motion to reduce congestion.

Be sure to watch Demetria Obilor's traffic reports every morning on Good Day. She will be offering alternate routes for drivers to use.

Also the NDOT is recommending the app called WAZE.
